Terms of Service
The Coxswain · effective 24 August 2026 · version 1.0
1 · What The Coxswain is
The Coxswain is a rowing news, calendar and results service at thecoxswain.app. News and the racing calendar are free. Paid plans ("Quarter Slide" and "Half Slide") add live results, follows, a personalised feed, athlete and club pages, and — on Half Slide — the full results archive and further features. What each plan includes is set out on our pricing page, which forms part of these terms at the moment you subscribe.
2 · Your account
You sign in with your email address; we send a sign-in link or code rather than storing a password. You are responsible for keeping access to that email address secure, and for what happens under your account. You must be 16 or older to create an account. You can delete your account at any time from Settings; deletion removes your profile, follows and preferences, and does not entitle you to a refund of any subscription period already paid (see section 5).
3 · Subscriptions, billing and renewal
- Plans are billed monthly or yearly, in advance, at the prices shown on the pricing page at the time you subscribe. Payment is taken by our payment provider, Stripe; we never see or store your card details.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel.
- You can cancel at any time from your account — no phone calls, no notice period. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for, and you keep access until then.
- If we change a price, we will email you at least 30 days before the new price applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
- If a payment fails and cannot be collected, your plan may be paused or ended after the retries our payment provider attempts. Your data and follows are kept; only the paid features close.
4 · Your right to cancel a new subscription (cooling-off)
When you first take out a subscription you have a statutory right to change your mind within 14 days. Because you asked us to start the service straight away, if you cancel within those 14 days we will refund what you paid less a proportionate amount for the days you had access. To cancel within the cooling-off period, use your account page or email us. This does not affect your statutory rights.
5 · Refunds
Beyond the 14-day cooling-off period, payments are not refundable: cancelling stops the next renewal rather than refunding the current period, and you keep access to the end of the period you have paid for. In particular, no refund is due because a regatta or event is postponed, cancelled, or reported late or incompletely by its organisers — we report racing; we do not run it. Nothing in this section limits the remedies the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you if the service itself is faulty: if our digital service does not do what these terms say it does, you are entitled to have it fixed, and to an appropriate price reduction if we cannot fix it.
6 · The data we publish
Results, entries, times and standings are compiled from public sources, event organisers and federations, reaching back decades, and we work continuously on their accuracy. They are provided for information: we do not guarantee that any result, time, name or record is complete or error-free, and the official record of any race is the organiser's. If you find an error, please use "Report a problem" in the app — corrections are part of the service.
7 · Fair use
Your plan is personal to you. You may not share your account, resell access, or systematically copy, scrape or redistribute the archive or feeds — by hand or by robot. Quoting results with attribution in the ordinary course of club life, journalism or research is welcome. We may suspend or close accounts that breach this section, with a pro-rata refund of any unused period only where the breach was innocent.
8 · Intellectual property
The Coxswain's name, design, software, editorial writing and the selection and arrangement of its database are ours or our licensors'. Race facts themselves belong to no one; the work of compiling, cleaning, connecting and presenting them is what you subscribe to.
9 · Service changes and availability
We improve the product continually and may change or retire features. If we materially reduce what your paid plan includes, we will tell you by email and you may cancel; if we discontinue the paid service entirely, we will give at least 30 days' notice and refund the unused part of any period you have paid for. We aim for the service to be available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted access.
10 · Our liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that are not a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms, for business losses (the service is for consumers), or for decisions made in reliance on published results or calendar entries; and our total liability to you in any 12-month period is limited to the amounts you paid us in that period.
11 · Changes to these terms
We may update these terms — for example when features, prices or the law change. For material changes we will email account holders at least 14 days before the change takes effect; continuing to use the service after that date is acceptance. The current version always lives at thecoxswain.app/terms, with its version and date at the top.
12 · The legal frame
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction — though if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings there, and nothing here deprives you of protections you are entitled to as a consumer under the law of the country you live in. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stands. These terms, the pricing page and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between us about the service.
13 · Complaints
Something wrong? Write to community@thecoxswain.app and a human will answer. If we cannot resolve a dispute, the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform no longer applies in the UK; UK consumers may contact their local Citizens Advice for guidance.
